WHIP = walks plus hits allowed per inning pitched by a pitcher. Basically how many baserunners they allow per innings. Lower equals better.

WAR = wins above replacement. Estimating how many more games a team helps you win than a replacement player. A replacement player is the quintessential AAAA player that you can get off the scrap heap at any time. Think Jahmai Jones or James Outman or any other of countless players hanging somewhere between AAA and the bigs for every team in MLB. There is obviously a lot that goes into the "Wins Above" calculation, but just understand it is accounting for hitting, defense, baserunning, and what position you play (hitting .230 with 15 HRs as a catcher is obviously different than as a 1B or DH).
