I’m not into the super nerd stuff like BABIP or Fpa etc but I think of OPS and whip as simple improvements on what we grew up with….

Ops. On base plus slugging. Basically gives you credit for being a good hitter like batting average used to via the on base percentage but it also incorporates walks and hbp so you get more value if you have a good eye. Slugging is a lot like the old hr and rbi in that guys who hit for more power are usually in the leaders of hr rbi and slugging. But slugging gives proportionally more value to doubles and triples.

On base percentage= hits + walks+ hbp divided by plate appearances (pa is at bats plus walks plus hbp)

Slugging is total bases divided by at bats. 4 bases for a hr 3 for a triple 2 for a double 1 for a single

Add them together and it’s a nice summary of hitting for average, good eye/quality at bats and power.

I like whip better than era because starters get charged for runs let up by relievers. Whip is pitcher specific. But even from a team standpoint there can be luck in era depending on when other teams get hits etc. whip is simply walks plus hits per innings pitched. It is a great way to see how many baserunners a pitcher is putting on. Over the long haul it’s a good predictor or runs given up.
