Monogamy can be kind of boring. Recent research actually shows that women are more likely than men to become bored with monogamy over time.

But just being out there can be dangerous. (Literally, for women.) So much can go wrong. PLus the social stigma of being openly non-monogamous.

Swinging provides a relatively safe container for that behavior. Wives are explicitly or implicitly vouching for their husbands, that they are not freaks or psychos, etc. and it can all be kept within the group.
