Yeah that kind of thinking used to be much more common among football coaches

A couple examples of very successful coaches who retired from coaching completely while still fairly young:

Ara Parseghian: 51. Had won NC one year earlier.

Joe Schmidt: 40. This is a really extreme case. He was a pretty successful NFL head coach, as well as a famous college and pro player. Getting out of the game completely at forty is pretty wild.
