So it seems they didn’t have a 5 point harness/booster seat for the kid, and the kid was able to slide out of the seatbelt, presumably even when it was snugly pulled across the kid’s lap.

I agree airline still fucked up by leaving the gate in the first place. Kick the family off; don’t fuck the entire rest of the plane load. Still unclear to me why they had to *cancel* the flight & couldn’t just depart somewhat delayed after returning to gate & removing the kid & family.
