...I get the other points you made. You're right that it can be challenging to find fragrances that you love and which won't break the bank. It takes some expenditure of time, energy and money, which may not be worth it to many.
I've said this before, but the "too much cologne" guy is almost always wearing a strong clubbing fragrance, like Dior Sauvage, JPG Ultra Male, Parfums de Marly Layton, Valentino Born in Roma, etc, or a heavy, incense or oud-based middle eastern fragrance. Not done talking cologne: I actually am baffled as to why anyone DOESN'T wear cologne. We only have 5 senses. We deliberately and enthusiastically try to experience enjoyment from the other 4. Why is smell excluded?

Some of it is cultural, Latin men love cologne. My experience with caucasians is that the rural types haven't used it as much. But time to evolve, especially older guys whose ph levels change and get that old man smell.*
