the early divers like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms were designed for navy divers with consulting from the French Navy in Blancpain's history. There is always a big fight between Rolex and Blancpain as to who actually marketed the first diver. Rolex fanboys claim that Blancpain originally only made divers for actual navy divers and didn't market them to the public until after 1953, while Blancpain defenders deny that Rolex produced submariners and sold them to the public in 1953. Some people really get into it and there are dozens of articles and podcasts reviewing the evidence, but whatever. Zodiac's SeaWolf and Omega's Seamaster came not long after and they are all great. I'm not a loyalist to any specific brand or model, as there are lots of really cool designs.
