Fauci did do something wrong: he knowingly minimized the possibility the virus was created in a Chinese lab with which US entities were involved under his jurisdiction. He then acted in ways consistent with covering that up by minimizing harmful Chinese behavior in following months. The excuses were initial uncertainty, then need for Chinese cooperation. The first was hardly scientific, the second laughable. But they fit well with cya.
That isn't the R criticism, of course.
