Honestly, pretending not to hear at all is probably the best strategy here…

But I really struggle to do that.
1. I hate, hate, HATE passive aggressive communication, so it’s hard for me to do it.
2. I’m also an intensely curious person, so if I can hear that she’s talking, my curiosity kicks in and I want to solve the puzzle of what those words were.

You described my situation exactly. My wife just starts talking at a low conversational volume from another room and thinks I: 1) know she's talking to me, and 2) can hear her at all. Both false.*
