The candidates as of today are a group of one, China. While in some aspects China is superior to America(ie,understanding the nature of climate change.) They are worse in others(human rights.) As of today this is a less than satisfactory choice.

Europe taken as a whole will be a major player but it doesn't have the cohesiveness to attain that position.

So for the near future we probably will have a triumvirate vying to be top dog.
