My dad just passed and everyone is asleep but me

I had a feeling about tonight. Wanted to say a few last words knowing it was too late. He was a complicated man. Wickedly intelligent, moderately corrupt. A great father for my first 16 years, then mostly a ghost. Barely knew my kids. We had always suspected something terrible in his childhood home. Too many bad outcomes. He confirmed the worst of our concerns to me last year after saying goodbye to my mom. The man, flaws and challenges and all, made a better home for his kids than he had, and made them such that they made better homes for their kids. That’s a successful life.

We’ve lost three of our parents in a year. Never saw this coming.
