Inflation had the big jump in 22-23, but nothing like the inflation of the 70s. There were gas lines in the 70s. Bombings. Bruce Springsteen made a whole career writing about the decline of industrial America and the hopelessness that came with it. Now we're looking back on it nostalgically as the good old days.
