was largely created because Germany and Japan were obliterated in WW2 and the US had unquestioned superiority. That went away not because the US started sucking but because by definition globalization is going to hurt the US' relative advantage, even if the US is making progress. So many economies that didn't exist or barely existed in the 50s: Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, ASEAN, Eastern European nations, a recovering Germany.
Having said that, stupid Trump policies that exacerbate the problem are not helpful.
