Politicians/society of the last 40-50 years are just trying to maintain the social programs put in place by the parents of boomers (Medicare and SS), but they are doing so with less relative dollars...

The US is now in a competitive global economy

The population is older and living longer, so the idea that SS would pay for retirement is a fallacy

Medical costs are out of control, straining Medicare. Many good reasons for that but unregulated insurance companies are gouging for their own pocketbooks.

Similarly, corporations are pulling back on health care spending and forcing more on employees. They have also taken away pensions which supplemented SS. This was somewhat necessary due to globalization shrinking profits and the actuarial realities of former workers living longer.
