I could just show up for the game if I wanted to, or I could go to the bar after, as well as other social events within that crowd. I hung up the cleats at around 53 or 54, but it was an enjoyable chapter in life.

I guess it’s a function of who plays soccer in the US and being in a university town, but my senior league was very cosmopolitan, not a bunch of ex-jock meatheads.

I think what you’re describing is actually very common for guys—it’s very easy to become the guy with a bunch of casual friends but maybe no real friends.
