1) With Mize, Mayfield was the 25th pick in the first round in 2025 (last year). He is in A ball. Had they kept Mize and taken a comp pick, that would fall after the 30th pick this year, somewhere in the 31-40 range I think. So how much different would that prospect be than Mayfield. Plus you get 2 months of Mize.

2) Even if you trade Mize, you still have some starters: Melton, Valdez, Montero, Flaherty (comes off DL in a few days). The 5th starter would come from Jobe (off DL in a week or so), Madden, maybe Verlander, maybe even River Ryan in a couple weeks or so.

The problem is that you are thinner and even if it works, you are going to stress the bullpen more. I think if you trade Mize, you had to make another deal for a decent reliever. We have a good system with a lot of prospects. Why didn't we do that. I guess they are thinking that Hurter comes back (I hope this is true because Vest is out for the year), and they can patchwork with Brieske or the Diaz kid they picked up a couple months ago. I also think this might be where River Ryan comes in. He is a starter with 6 pitches, but he is working his stamina up so for the remainder of this year he could be what Melton was for us last year out of the pen in the late season/post season.

Starters: Melton, Valdez, Montero, Flaherty, Jobe/Verlander
Bullpen: Jansen, Holton, Hurter, Ryan, Madden, Finnegan
Others: Waguspack, Sommers, Hanifee, Brieske

It's not terrible but they need health from Flaherty, Jobe, Verlander, Hurter, Ryan or at least most of them.
