Baines made it because Tony LaRussa pushed for his candidacy

He coached him on two separate occasions and really liked him as a player. That's an admirable thing to do for your player, in a certain light, but it makes a mockery of the HOF, as does LaRussa's stated rationale (Baines was top-5 in his career in game-winning RBI) and LaRussa's unstated rationale (Baines was only about 150 hits short of 3,000).
