1. If the door is stained, forget it. Some of these products at will take paint pretty well, but none will take stain in a way that even remotely matches the stained wood.

2. If you used wood filler, make sure it’s the old school epoxy type (that needs to be mixed). The workaday premixed wood filler will not be strong enough to hold that crack under the pressure of the wood splitting.

3. You’ll need some pipe clamps long enough to clamp the crack together, and you’ll need to leave them on until the wood filler is fully cured. So, realistically, you really need to remove and re-hang the door in order to do this repair.

- Really depends on the crack. But since it's clean through the door, you should start with wood glue. Lots of it, and work it into the crack. I'd also clamp the door from both sides using woodworking pipe clamps. Then if there are still gaps after you glue/clamp, go in with epoxy wood filler** - By Brad September 23, 2026 at 02:46:15 PM
