The Victors

My wife is a legal immigrant to this country and works in a field America desperately needs more workers in. She did everything the right way and has never broken a law---not even a traffic ticket. Hell she has never called into or been late to work. She speaks excellent English and is getting better every day. She has a heart of gold and has made me a better person.

We are afraid to fly or travel. She is afraid to get groceries by herself. She hasn't visited her family in her home country in over 3 years because she is afraid some poorly trained(racist) government employee won't let her back in despite indisputable legal status We are expecting our first child and sometimes I wonder what the point is. Our country is so broken. Her family speaks about America like the land of opportunity....of hope. I wonder if that is still true....

My wife comments about how nice Americans are even though she thinks some of it is fake. She has always been treated with kindness even by people that voted for Trump. My wife doesn't talk politics---too afraid. Those same Trump voters are not nearly as vocal now, in fact they barely talk at all about politics unless it's to criticize Trump. They have acknowledged some of the awful things going on in our country. The part I don't find reassuring is they like to remind her that she is safe. It won't be her. She didn't do anything wrong so she won't be snatched up by masked men jumping out of an unmarked vehicle because her skin isn't white. What female wouldn't run in that situation?

I keep telling her Americans will respond, just wait for November. Americans will get it right. This election should be an 80/20 landslide loss for republicans but instead we will get a 55/45 result with some states doubling down on this bullshit and others fighting for what is left for our democratic republic. The fight goes on I guess...
