Had an "America in 2026" experience yesterday

I'm a, somewhat capable, serious poker player. So I spend a lot of time in my local card room. These rooms are over run by white men who voted for Trump and have way too many MAGA blowhards. Yesterday, I get one of the type who must run his mouth. So for four hours I'm listening to him spew his bullshit which, because of current trends, he sometimes tempers by telling everyone "and I'm not even a MAGA guy".

It reaches the point where he is all the way back in his 2016 grievance about Hilary. He says, "I'd vote for Vladimar Putin before I'd vote for that bitch." At this point, I'm over it and say "Well, I guess that's good, because that is exactly what the fuck you did."

Immediately, the MAGA dealer invokes the "no politics at the table" rule and the, up to then silent, MAGA folks start in on the, "it doesn't matter they are all the same" defense.

I bring this to your discussion, only to say, the unsolveable problem is that a frighteningly high number of Americans are so unwilling to apply their intellectual curiosity to the challenges of our Declaration and our Constitution that I fear there is no path to undoing the inestimable damage that has been done.

Even should November provide a temporary blip of resistance, my fears for your wife and the many good Americans like her will remain.
