I read a technical breakdown of the clock insert by NBC. It was pretty interesting stuff.

There is a standard camera "package" for every game. I don't remember number of camera detail - but most cameras with 60 frames per second and then there a few cameras set for super slowmo at 120 fps.

With double the frame rate - the 120fps cameras put out twice the data - so they are bandwidth hogs (the pipes are only so big). Because of that there is special processing on those cameras to save on the overall data flow. If a frame doesn't change from one 1/120th second to the next, the computer will decide if it is ok to just drop the frame. That obviously doesn't happen when you are close up game action or whatever - but focusing on clock? Many of the frames are the same - especially clocks that don't have tenths of a second.

The camera NBC had on the clock was a 120fps camera.

So when you go to sync a replay between two cameras - one with 60 fps (and full data transfer) and the other with 120 fps camera that may have dropped 10-20 frames - it can be technically challenging.

The re-processing and syncing will just fudge it and get it pretty close, and that is usually more than good enough - but when tenths of a second actually matter? It can be very misleading.

I have no way of knowing if this is true - but based on what I know about processing, interpolation and all of that stuff it sounds about right.
