I think there is a little difference for the casual viewer that sees NBC overlay their footage of the scoreboard clock with their slo mo video replay

I mean it is literally the actual game clock shown alongside the play as it happens. It goes to zero. That's different than if it was just their computer generated graphic of a clock that clearly isn't actual footage of the scoreboard clock.
If you knew nothing about this play other than the replay NBC showed, you would believe WMU got screwed. Fortunately the Big Ten quickly released their replay center footage which contradicts NBCs and shows how NBC did not have their videos synced.
